Professional Development for Online Teachers

"Every student is taught by qualified teachers" is one of SREB's Challenge to Lead Goals for Education. This goal reflects, as does the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), the central importance of the teacher to student academic success. NCLB requires that all teachers in core academic subjects be "highly qualified" in areas of their teaching assignment.

In may ways, quality professional development that meets the specific academic and instructional needs of online teachers is even more important than that for traditional teachers, because online teachers require relatively new and unique skills and knowledge not addressed in traditional pre-service and professional development programs. SREB supports quality online professional development because it helps online teachers to access learning opportunities when and where they need them.   Information about (and links to) professional development opportunities for middle grades and high school teachers - and especially for online secondary teachers - are provided through this Web site.
If you know about or have participated in professional development opportunities not identified here, please write to OnlineTeacher@sreb.org. Provide a link and tell us how you use this resource.
